Until the 19th century it was mainly agricultural, but its connection with the sea, Atlantic trade and the Camino de Santiago boosted its canning industry. In 1896 the first artisanal cannery was founded there, giving rise to a brand that produced over 100,000 boxes per year using traditional methods and earning the trust of prestigious clients such as Clube Naval Setubalense.
