Perfect to enjoy on their own or in fresh Mediterranean-style dishes:

  • In warm salads with potatoes and red onion
  • As a tapa with sourdough bread and olives
  • In pasta or rice dishes with vegetables

Production, Maturation and Preparation

The sardines are selected at the harbour and cleaned by hand. They are preserved in olive oil and piri-piri without additives. This method follows the traditional process inherited from the first cannery founded in Matosinhos in 1896 by Joaquim Ferreira Pedro Luças, whose legacy continues today through manual techniques, quality and tradition. Packaged in a 120 g can to ensure maximum flavour and preservation.

History and Origin

Matosinhos has a cultural heritage closely linked to the sea, Jacobean pilgrims and a century-old canning tradition. Until the 19th century it was agricultural land, but its connection to the sea and trade routes propelled its importance. In 1896 the first fish-canning factory was founded here, the origin of one of Portugal’s iconic brands. At its peak it produced up to 100,000 boxes a year, maintaining artisanal methods and earning the trust of prestigious clients such as Clube Naval Setubalense.
