Although it was an agricultural land for centuries, its ties to fishing, Atlantic trade, and the Camino de Santiago boosted its development. In 1896 the first fish cannery was founded there, giving rise to a production that surpassed 100,000 boxes annually using artisanal methods and earning the trust of prestigious clients such as the Clube Naval Setubalense.
