Contraindications of Honey

There are some contraindications for consuming honey. They are as follows:

- People with allergies: individuals prone to allergies should avoid honey, as it may cause allergic reactions due to the pollen grains present.

- Children under 1 year of age: their digestive system takes over a year to fully develop, so foods that could cause severe intoxication should be avoided.

Types of Honey

There is a vast variety of honey, differentiated by various factors:

- By the origin of the flower or shrub and the collection: for example, spring honey, produced in late May; main honey, produced between June and July; and late honey, from August to September.

- By the combination of flowers: multifloral (various flowers), monofloral (a specific flower), and forest honey (from tree leaves).

- By their textures: flower honey (fresh, clear, and thick) and honeydew honey (less sweet and harder to solidify).

Some of the types of honey we can find include:

Eucalyptus Honey

Eucalyptus honey is ochre-coloured, aromatic, and has a characteristic woody flavour. It acts as an antiseptic for the respiratory and urinary tracts, has balsamic effects, and is vermifuge. It is recommended for colds and respiratory ailments.

Chestnut Honey

Chestnut honey comes from the flower of the fruit and the exudation of the tree. It is rich in iron and beneficial for anaemia, nosebleeds, and metrorrhagia.

Heather honey is dark mahogany in colour and slightly bitter in taste. It is recommended for cystitis (as it increases diuresis), fluid retention, kidney stones, bladder and kidney inflammation, heart problems (coronary insufficiency, arrhythmias, heart disease, angina, and heart attack), and urethral inflammation. Additionally, it is antirheumatic and, due to its mineral content, indicated for anaemia, loss of appetite, and fatigue.

Multifloral Honey

Dark amber in colour, with a variable and intense flavour, it comes from various simultaneous blooms. It is anti-inflammatory, digestive, and healing. It works as a dietary supplement and is rich in minerals. Recommended to prevent anaemia and aid digestion. It is also antiseptic.
