Safe online shopping: how to identify reliable online stores and avoid fraud
Why it is important to shop safely online
Online shopping is already part of our routine: to save time, compare options or access products we don’t have nearby. The problem is that, just as there are trustworthy stores, there are also unreliable websites that take advantage of haste or lack of information.
Shopping safely is not about living in fear, it’s about shopping with good judgment. When you know how to identify a reliable website, pay securely and avoid giving away your data, you remove worries and avoid most unpleasant surprises: strange charges, orders that never arrive or impossible returns.
At AnchoasDeluxe we see it this way: if you shop with peace of mind, so do we. And if we can help you navigate the internet more safely (wherever you shop), even better.
How to identify a secure online store
A secure online store usually “feels right” for very specific reasons: it is easy to understand, explains the basics, does not hide information and does not rush you. Before buying, I look at three very simple things.
- Clarity: well-written texts, coherent photos, easy-to-find information.
- Transparency: who they are, how to contact them and which conditions apply.
- Professionalism: standard payment methods, a clear checkout process, visible policies.
If a website is confusing, aggressive or looks “rushed”, it’s best to stop and review it more carefully.
What it means for a website to have HTTPS and why it is essential
HTTPS is the browser “padlock”. It means that the connection between your device and the store is encrypted, and that data travels securely.
- The website should start with https://.
- A padlock icon should appear in the browser bar.
If a store does not have HTTPS, it is not an appropriate place to enter personal data or make payments. HTTPS does not guarantee that the store is honest, but it is the minimum technical requirement for safe shopping.
Secure payment methods: which to use and which to avoid
Payment is where much of the security is decided. My recommendation is to choose methods that protect you and are backed by banks or recognized platforms.
Most recommended:
- Card with verification (3D Secure, app confirmation or SMS).
- PayPal or other platforms with buyer protection.
- Bizum integrated into an official payment gateway (if the store offers it properly).
- Virtual card (if your bank allows it) to limit risks.
Use with caution:
- Bank transfer to unknown stores (hard to reverse).
- Payments outside the website (through strange links, email or messaging apps).
- Requests for card details via WhatsApp or email (red flag).
A serious store will never ask for sensitive data through informal channels.
Which personal data is normal and which you should never provide
To shop online, a store needs certain data. But there are clear limits. Knowing them protects you.
Normal data:
- First and last name.
- Shipping address.
- Email for confirmations.
- Phone number (sometimes needed for delivery).
Data they should never ask for:
- Bank credentials or access codes.
- ID photos without a very justified reason.
- Card details via email or chat.
- Unnecessary personal information (income, passwords, etc.).
If they ask for something that does not make sense for a normal purchase, it’s better to stop.
How to check the reliability of an online store before buying
This is the quick check I recommend doing in two minutes. A reliable store usually has all of this visible and well explained.
- Legal information: company name, tax ID, legal notice and privacy policy.
- Real contact: professional email, phone number and, if possible, address.
- Clear conditions: shipping, delivery times, returns and refunds.
- External reviews: reviews on Google or platforms outside their own website.
If you can’t find who is behind the store or how to make a claim, it’s better not to proceed.
Warning signs of an unreliable online store
There are patterns that repeat frequently on suspicious websites. They don’t all need to be present; if several appear, it’s already a reason to distrust.
- Poorly translated texts or serious errors.
- Generic or copied photos, with no signs of real products.
- Constant urgency (countdowns, “last units” everywhere).
- Only one strange payment method or insistence on bank transfers.
- Lack of policies on shipping/returns or confusing conditions.
If something feels “off”, it’s not worth the risk.
What to do if you have doubts before buying
If you’re not sure, the best thing is to pause. One minute of review can prevent a big problem.
- Search for external reviews (Google, social networks, forums).
- Contact the store and see if they respond clearly.
- Make a small purchase if you want to test without risking much.
- Use a protected payment method (PayPal or verified card).
Safe shopping is not about knowing everything, it’s about making good decisions when something isn’t clear.
Our commitment at AnchoasDeluxe to secure shopping
It may seem strange to talk about cybersecurity from a gourmet store, but for us it makes perfect sense. We sell products, yes, but we also want the experience to be calm and reliable.
- Transparency: clear information, visible conditions and real contact.
- Secure payments: we work with recognized and protected payment methods.
- Human support: if you have questions, there are real people on the other side.
- Respect for your data: we only ask for what is necessary to manage your order.
In short: we take care of the purchase the same way we take care of product selection.
Shopping safely is not just about protecting your money, it’s about protecting your peace of mind
When you shop safely, you shop without tension. You don’t check your account every five minutes, you don’t doubt every email and you don’t feel like you’ve done something “blindly”.
For us, that’s the most important thing: that online shopping is comfortable, clear and free of scares. Because a good purchase is not only measured by what arrives at home, but by how you felt throughout the process.
If you take one idea from this article, let it be this: shop calmly, with judgment and with confidence. Your peace of mind is worth a lot.
