Prada a Tope
Prada a Tope: artisanal craftsmanship from El Bierzo with soul. Wines, preserves, roasted peppers, and cherries in liqueur made in the historic Palacio de Canedo.
Prada a Tope: tradition, character and the flavour of El Bierzo
Prada a Tope is much more than a brand: it is the vibrant, artisanal vision of José Luis Prada, born in Cacabelos in 1945, in the heart of El Bierzo. Its story begins in a small Jacobean village of barely 5,000 inhabitants, linked to wine and commerce since the Middle Ages.
From a unique shop to an icon of the Northwest
At just fifteen, Prada joined the family business and soon left his personal mark. His shop in Cacabelos became a reference point: an authentic bazaar where one could find footwear, clothing and items impossible to locate in the traditional Spanish market. Without knowing it, he was beginning to build a unique brand.
The awakening of Bierzo’s flavours
As visitors discovered the charm of the shop, Prada began rescuing and revaluing handcrafted products from his family and the village. Thus, two of his emblematic creations were born: cherries in liqueur and wood-roasted Bierzo peppers. Little by little, these artisanal preparations took the place of boots, shirts and fashion items, transforming the business into a pantry of authentic flavours.
La Moncloa de Cacabelos: a turning point
In the 1970s, Prada took a decisive step and opened La Moncloa de Cacabelos, a space that revolutionised regional hospitality. Its distinctive aesthetics, commitment to quality and deep connection to the territory attracted visitors from all over Spain. Visiting this place became an experience worth travelling to El Bierzo for.
Palacio de Canedo: the heart of Prada a Tope
In the 1990s, Prada set his sights on the Palacio de Canedo, a historic building he transformed into the core of his project. There he created his winery and artisan preserves workshop, recovering traditional Bierzo recipes. The Palace also houses a restaurant based on local produce and an accommodation with 14 unique rooms where every detail preserves the essence of the building.
A legacy that continues to grow
Today, Prada a Tope is a gastronomic emblem of El Bierzo: unique wines, wood-roasted peppers, cherries in liqueur, chestnuts, jams and a long list of artisanal preserves that maintain their timeless flavour.
